About Us

::  Overview  ::  People  ::  Blog.AlwaysKnownAs.com

We developed the concept of AKA, or AlwaysKnownAs.com, based on our belief that the world needs a simple and safe way for people to stay in touch with each other and the idea that internet users should be in control of their own online identities. As we set about turning that concept into reality, we made ourselves two promises:

1) We will safeguard the privacy of your personal information – no matter what.
  We've thought of every conceivable way to protect your personal information. We've chosen technologies that assure secure transmission and storage. We've created a privacy policy that guarantees the security of your information. And most importantly, we've chosen a business model that effectively eliminates any financial need to ever share or sell your information. We're protective about our own information, so we tried to make a service that will please our own picky selves. We promise to be honest and transparent with you. That's what we would want and what you deserve.

2) We will give you a way to create a personalized, ongoing online identity that is under your own control.
  Most of us who've been using the internet for a while have seen our identity change over time. As we move through different jobs, cities, ISPs, we've lost touch with people and they've lost track of us. So we developed the concept of an AKA, or a nickname, that could stay with you forever (and now can be used as your openID, which is even more powerful). We wanted the process of choosing your AKA to be fun and expressive, a reflection of your unique personality. So whether you're a john_smith or a katwoman, you can use your AKA as an ongoing, unchanging identity that will tell the world not only where you are, but who you are. And anyone who's ever known your AKA can find you again, in five, ten...even fifty years.

And we're still trying to find ways to make your AKA and your openID more useful. Currently your AKA or openID links friends, colleagues, and websites to your contact information. Who knows what it can link to in the future? Maybe you'll be giving co-workers permission to view your calendar, or friends access to your gallery of wedding photos. We haven't even begun to imagine all the things you could manage through your AKA, but we're sure you'll let us know if you have a good idea.

So that's it in a nutshell. AKA was created by people who love the internet as much as you. We want to do good things. We want our mothers to be proud of us. And we want you to have some fun while staying in touch with the people most important to you.
